THE GIANTS NEED A VETERAN QB LIKE JOE FLACCO

After the 2024 season the Giants were left in desperate need of a quarterback, the season started with Daniel Jones and ended with Tommy DeVito and Drew Lock.  The results were not good to say the least, so the Giants cleaned house and as of today the only quarterback left on the roster is Tommy DeVito.

Before free agency even began there were rumors of the Giants looking to sign a veteran quarterback.  They were linked to several seasoned veteran signal callers including Matthew Stafford, Sam Darnold and Aaron Rodgers.  Once the chips all started to fall in place first Stafford decided to stay in Los Angeles with the Rams.  Then Sam Darnold signed a three year, 100-million-dollar contract with the Seattle Seahawks. Finally, there was rumor of Aaron Rodgers staying in NY and moving from the Jets locker room to the Giants locker room.  While this move is not off the table the longer it drags on the less likely it becomes.

Now where does that leave the Giants, obviously they will be drafting a quarterback with the number three pick.  Who that will be is unclear, but I am more interested in the veteran they will sign to compete with that rookie.  The top three candidates currently look to be Russel Wilson, Jameis Winston and Joe Flacco.  The safe play would probably be Russel Wilson, coming off a season where he started 11 games for the Steelers and threw for 2482 yards, 155 rushing yards and 18 total touchdowns.  Wilson played it safe and only had 5 interceptions, leading he Steelers to the NFL Playoffs only to be knocked out by the Ravens in the wild card round.  Winston and Flacco on the other hand have tremendous potential with a wide receiver like Malik Nabers.  These quarterbacks are very similar with big arms and like to throw the ball down field for big explosive plays.  While they have both enjoyed success, the downfall has been interceptions.  I think that the best play for the Giants would be either Winston or Flacco.  Not only would they be getting a veteran quarterback to mentor the rookie they draft, but also a guy that could step in and make big plays on the field.

In 2024 Jameis Winston started 12 games for the Browns, throwing for 2121 yards and 13 touchdowns if that was the end of the stat line it would be great.  Unfortunately, Winston threw nearly as many interceptions as he did touchdowns with 12 interceptions in those 12 games.  Meanwhile last season Joe Flacco started 8 games for the Colts throwing for 1761 yards with 12 touchdowns, and only 7 interceptions.  While their numbers are very similar Flacco has a slight advantage when you compare them side by side on paper.   I think Flacco is the right choice, not only because of his numbers.   Flacco has 17 years of NFL experience, and a Super Bowl Ring in 2012 as the quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens.  If I was the GM for the Giants this is the kind of resume that I would want for a mentor for my rookie quarterback.
