DALLAS COWBOYS – COACHING NEWS HIRE BRIAN SCHOTTENHEIMER
As usual the Dallas Cowboys must make everything a circus, with Jerry Jones as the ring master. All season long we have heard chatter of this season being the last for Mike McCarthy as the team’s coach.

On January 5, the Cowboys played the Commanders in the final game of the regular season, and the Commanders won the game 23 to 19. One day later January 6th the Chicago Bears requested permission to interview Mike McCarthy for their head coaching vacancy. The Cowboys denied that request on January 7th because he was still under contract until January 14th, and they had an exclusive bargaining period. This seemed to signal to the rest of the football world that the Cowboys intended to keep McCarthy for their coach. Just when you think you know what Jerry Jones is up to, he goes the other direction and on January 13th Dallas Cowboys announced that they would be terminating Mike McCarthy as the head coach.
Then the wild rumors began to fly about Dion Sanders taking the head coaching job in Dallas, and every media outlet ran with that story. In the meantime, the cowboys actually interviewed Leslie Frazier Seahawks Assistant Head Coach, former Jets head coach Robert Saleh, and former Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.
After the dust settled the Cowboys ended up hiring from within by promoting long time assistant Brian Schottenheimer to the head coaching vacancy. Schottenheimer is a legacy in the NFL his father Marty was the head coach in Cleaveland, Kansas City, Washington and San Diego. Brian Schottenheimer has served as an offensive coordinator with New York Jets for 5 season 2007-11, St Louis Rams 2012-14, Seattle Seahawks 2018-20, and Dallas from 2023-24. While he was the offensive coordinator with the Jets, he only had one losing season, in St Louis he did not have any winning season. He fared much better his time in Seattle, he went 10-6, 11-5 and 12-4. Then in 2022 he joined the Cowboys first year as a consultant, then in 2023 he took over the offensive coordinator job and went 12-5. This year his offense finished with a 7-10 record. Overall, his time spent as an offensive coordinator was successful 10 of his 15 seasons as an offensive coordinator were winning seasons. I guess the Jerry is hoping that success translates to a winning formula for the Cowboys this year.
